How to Treat Gingivitis at Home?

Gingivitis is triggered by plaque buildup due to food residue on the teeth. That's why it's recommended that you brush your teeth regularly, especially in the morning and at night. If you have gingivitis, here are some independent treatments that you can do at home:


1. Gargle Salt Water

Salt water can soothe inflamed gums, reduce pain, eliminate bacteria, remove food debris, and reduce bad breath. Mix warm water and salt to taste, then stir until smooth. Use the salt water made for gargling for 30 seconds and spit it out. Repeat 2-3 times per day for maximum results. Avoid using it too often and for too long because it has the potential to damage the tooth enamel.

2. Brush Teeth Twice a Day

Tooth brushing routine helps remove food residue in the mouth, thereby preventing the development of bacteria that cause gingivitis. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, especially in the morning after breakfast and at night before going to bed.

Use a soft toothbrush and replace it with a new one every 12-6 weeks. No need to overdo it when brushing your teeth, just do it for two minutes with 10-15 brushings per tooth. Also, don't forget to always clean your tongue when brushing your teeth.

3. Use Mouthwash

Apart from salt water, you can use mouthwash which is widely sold in the market. Mouthwash works to clean the mouth and teeth, and reduce bad breath. Another benefit is preventing plaque accumulation on the teeth and preventing cavities. Mouthwash is not a substitute for brush and toothpaste, but is used together after brushing your teeth. Just use the mouthwash for one minute and spit it out (don't swallow it). However, keep in mind, mouthwash is used only when needed and not all the time.

4. Use Dental Floss

Dental floss ( dental floss ) serves to help remove food residue that has slipped on the teeth. Just do it this way once per day. You do this by wrapping one end of the thread around the index finger of the right hand, then wrapping the other end around the index finger of the left hand. Pinch the two ends of the floss with your index finger and thumb, then use it to clean between the teeth one by one.
